I Live in the Matrix
My Sociology of Development class closely parallels classes I have taken at UI. So, to save time, I always try to revamp essays to apply to the class. This unit we discussed Bourdieu and Giddens, two macro-society theorists. This was convenient because I had already written an essay on their theories for Theory class last fall (thanks Troy ). While rereading my paper over Bourdieu and Giddens’ macro theories on society, I realized that my life in Guatemala City is a reflection of their theories. My life is the Matrix!

Hey Nancy...I wish you had written this a year earlier before I had to hand in my essay because it made the whole thing more understandable!
Hope you will gain some "agency" over your life in Guatemala.
Miss you,
Árdís
Agency, I like that!
Really interesting Nancy. I have a love hate relationship with social or historical theory. At one point it makes complex systems understandable but on the other hand is so general and overarching that it may not account for that individual "agency." Hmmm...
I believe Giddens explains that people don't really have individual agency but must combine with others to make social change. Hm. I was amazed at my theorizing, really, as it's not my forte.
You are more aware of culture and power than most people twice your age. Remember to remember how to use this in your life.
